April 20, 2026
A Funeral Service for Sophie C. Warne of Badger, MN was held on Monday, April 20, 2026 at 11:00AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Badger, MN. Visitation was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 5-7PM with a prayer service at 6:30PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at Badger City Cemetery in Badger, MN.
Sophie was born on February 15, 1944, to George and Lillie (Beito) Brotherston at the Roseau Hospital. She grew up on a small grain farm ten miles south of Badger and graduated from Badger High School in 1962.
She went on to attend Nursing School in Crookston and obtained her LPN Licensure. Before she left for Crookston, she had met Darrel Warne at the Northstar Pavilion in Benwood thanks to the coaxing of Sophie’s uncle Lenny Beito. Recently, her three sons discovered a couple boxes of love letters going back and forth from Crookston to Grygla. They only read a couple, but were brought back in time as in those days the outside of the envelope only needed the person’s name and the town. Sophie and Darrel were married on November 30, 1963; and were proud to be the first couple married at Faith Lutheran Church, just across the field to the east of where she grew up.
They settled in Badger, and in the spring of 1965, Sophie began her 49-year career as a nurse for the then named Roseau Area Hospital. She made a lot of great friends there. All three boys had the number to the hospital memorized because sometimes they needed to call mom and explain the misdeeds of one of their brothers. Sophie was very proud to be a nurse, and we remember well the white nurse’s cap, dress, and shoes, the uniform common in the 1970’s. It was also common to hear her snapping her Doublemint gum down the hospital hallways.
She and Darrel were always active in the church and community activities in Badger. You would be hard pressed to find someone with more Badger High School spirit than Sophie. She took great pride in attending ALL of her sons’ sporting events and other activities, and her boys are appreciative of all the nurses who would switch shifts or cover for her so she could make her way to football and basketball games.
She and Darrel continued that tradition, making their way to see their eight grandchildren participate in sports, music, and theater.
Sophie is survived by her three sons: Dion (Laura) of Willmar; Stacey (Heidi) of Badger; Kent (Lori) of Newfolden. Sophie has eight grandchildren: Joshua (Becca), Samuel, Natalie, Keisha, Noah, Gabriel, Ava and Ty Warne; and one great granddaughter, Evelyn. Also surviving is her brother Robert (Kim) of Colorado Springs, CO, sisters-in-law Lorraine Stenvik of Goodridge and Debbie (Skip) Cox of Menahga, and brother-in-law Lowell (Barb) Warne of Erskine. Sophie is also survived by her former sister-in-law, Jean Warne, in addition to several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
Sophie is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Darrel, parents George and Lillie Brotherston, in-laws Jack and Pen Warne, and brother Haze and his wife Barb Beito.
Sophie’s family would like to express their gratitude to Lifecare Manor for the wonderful care she revived this last year. Memorials are preferred to Faith Lutheran Church or Badger School.
