Doris Mae (Miller) Wicklund, 98
Doris Mae (Miller) Wicklund was born May 6, 1926, to parents John and Pearl (Gorvin) Miller in Greenbush. Doris was the fourth of eight children.
The summer before her senior year, older sister Lillian and Doris worked at Libby’s Cannery in Portland during World War II. She attended school in Greenbush and graduated as the Valedictorian in the class of 1944 (also the last living graduate).
Doris worked at the creamery in Greenbush and was also the bookkeeper at the elevator. While working at the elevator, she began a courtship with Donald Wicklund. Don and Doris were married on June 11, 1950, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush. They loved to dance in Badger Friday, Strathcona Saturday, and Malung Sunday Night. She also loved to bowl. Don and Doris bought the Ace Hardware store in Greenbush in 1954. After forty years of owning Wicklund Ace Hardware, Don and Doris sold the family store to their sons, Dale and Daryl.
They spent years traveling, especially liking to travel to the West coast to visit relatives, before being blessed with two sons, Dale and Daryl. They had many memories at their cabin in Birch Beach when the boys were young.
In 1990, Doris was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was given less than one year to live. Through experimental cancer treatments, support of family and friends, and divine faith, she was later able to “ring the bell.”
Don and Doris wintered in Arizona for 25+ years and met many lifelong friends while playing cards, listening to music, and sipping coffee. She was a card shark and enjoyed Bridge or Pinochle. She loved to thrift for dishes and antiques. Doris had a great deal of patience for her five grandchildren and was privileged to know six great grandchildren.
Doris was called home on November 14, 2024, at the age of 98, with sister Dorothy by her side.
Doris is survived by her sons, Dale (Annette) and Daryl (Lisa); grandchildren, Alicia (Eric) Bauman of Greenbush, Anna (Trevor) Peterson of Middle River, Abby (Mike) Trinka of Greenbush, Nels (Alyssa) Wicklund of Waterloo, IA, and Emily (Ross) Ilstrup of Elk River; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Aiden Bauman, Ada, Nora, Carter Peterson, Ellie Trinka; sister, Dorothy Minske of Pengilly; sister-in-law, Adell of Greenbush; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents, John and Pearl; siblings, Ernest (Alice), Myron (Carol), Lillian (Al) Kriko, Walter, Donald, and Harry; and brother-in-law, Clare Minske.
We would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Lifecare Greenbush Manor for the wonderful care they provided to Doris over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your organization of choice, American Cancer Society, or Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.
